Branch drains and the main line: how your home's drainage fits together
Think of your home's drainage as a set of smaller pipes joining one larger pipe. Each fixture, a sink, a toilet, a shower, a bathtub, has its own branch drain, which carries water away from that fixture. Those branch drains join the main sewer line, the larger pipe that carries wastewater from the whole home out to the sewer system. If one branch drain is blocked, usually only that fixture is affected. If the main sewer line is blocked, water from several fixtures has nowhere to go, so several fixtures back up, gurgle, or drain slowly at the same time. From the home, the main line continues as the house sewer to its connection with the City sewer line, and the City sewer main carries wastewater away from the street. This page explains that system in general terms only; it does not diagnose any particular home.
